Looking for somewhere to take Mum this Mother’s Day that won’t break the bank but still delivers lip-slurpingly good food? We may have found just the place. We sent a few members of our team to one of Millennium Hotels and Resorts' newest ventures to do some intense research – purely for your benefit – and here is the verdict.
As soon as you type ‘M Social’ into Google and venture onto their website, you can tell these guys aren’t mucking around. With a refreshingly new take on the hotel experience, the website boasts a thorough understanding of who their clientele is. And as much as we could keep explaining the funky text, vibrant images and ease of navigation, that’s not what we’re here for. We are here to tell you about the restaurant within M Social, playfully named Beast and Butterflies.
At a time when Auckland’s viaduct seems to be exploding with new eateries, donned with fake plants and backdrops created purely for the social-media savvy, Beast and Butterflies popped up at just the right time. Set in Princes Wharf, this trendy and contemporary restaurant comes across as a breath of fresh air. The white painted chairs, bright coloured cushions and mirrored tables ooze a certain level of sophistication yet warmth that many other Auckland restaurants fail to achieve. The open-plan dining and unobstructed view of Quay Street makes it perfect for any occasion – from a quick beer on the weekend with a heavy side of people-watching, to a romantic date night for two.
Now let’s talk about the food. Oh my gosh the food. It’s not often that you come across somewhere in Auckland Central that can mix Asian fusion, street food and seafood all together and have it come out as something other then what you could easily grab from any neighbourhood night market. This is different. Think seafood laksa with tiger prawns, or beef rendang curry where the meat is so tender, you barely need a fork.
The flavours and textures of each and every ingredient in the dishes have been planned, thought out, and executed to a degree of sophistication that one wouldn’t expect from a ‘hotel restaurant’. But that’s the thing. Thinking of Beast and Butterflies as a hotel restaurant deserves a slap on the wrist because it isn’t just that. It’s funky, fresh and inviting – and you don’t even need to be staying in the hotel to enjoy it!
With a tagline of ‘Feeding the Fabulous’ and the option of a cocktail trolley, we don’t know about you guys but we felt right at home.
